How to Reset the Check Vent Light on a GE Dryer

Many owners ignores this light at first because the dryer still seems to work. I'd suggest taking it seriously, though.

Your dryer is telling you that air is not flowing out the way it should, and that makes drying slower and raises the risk of a lint fire. The good news is that clearing it is usually something you can do yourself.

What Does the Check Vent Light Mean on a GE Dryer?

The Check Vent light on a GE dryer means airflow is restricted. Clean the lint screen, straighten the vent hose, clear the vent duct and outside flap, then reset the dryer.

On GE dryers with this feature, the dryer watches the airflow while it runs. When it senses that air isn't leaving fast enough, it turns on the Check Vent light as a warning. The light does not mean a part inside your dryer is broken.

Clean the Lint Screen

Start with the most easiest step. A full or coated lint screen is enough to trigger the light on its own.

Remove the screen and pull off the lint. Then hold it under the tap. If water beads up instead of running through, it has a film from dryer sheets.

Wash it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse, and let it dry completely.

Straighten the Vent Hose

Pull the dryer away from the wall and look at the hose between the dryer and the wall. If it's been pushed back too far, it can be squashed flat or bent sharply, and the dryer notice that straight away.

Straighten the hose and keep it as short as you can. A rigid or semi-rigid metal duct holds its shape much better than thin foil or plastic hose, and it's safer too.

Clear the Vent Duct

Lint build up inside the vent duct over months and years, and it's the most common reason the light keeps coming back.

Always unplug the dryer first, and on a gas dryer turn off the gas valve and be careful not to bend the gas line when you move it.

Check the Outside Vent Flap

Go outside while the dryer is running. The flap on the vent cover should open, and you should feel a strong stream of warm air.

If the flap is stuck shut, clogged with lint, or blocked by a nest or snow, clear it. A vent cover with a fine screen can catch lint and block the airflow, so replace it with a proper dryer vent cover if you have one.

Reset the Dryer After Cleaning

After you fix the airflow, the light may not turn off right away. On many GE models it clears on its own after the next normal cycle with good airflow.

If it stays on, unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for about five minutes, then restore power and run a load.

If the light still comes back after a thorough cleaning, your vent run may be too long or have too many bends, and a vent professional can check it.
