Heat and Drying
- GE dryer not heating: Spins but blows cold air. Start with the double breaker, then the vent and thermal fuse.
- GE dryer not drying clothes: Finishes the cycle with damp clothes. Check for heat first, then the lint screen and sensor bars.
- GE dryer takes too long to dry: Needs two or three cycles to dry a load. A clogged vent is the usual cause.
Power and Starting
- GE dryer not turning on: No lights, no sound. Check the plug, the breaker, and the control lock.
- GE dryer not starting: Lights come on but the drum does not start. The sound it makes points to the cause.
- GE dryer keeps tripping the breaker: The breaker flips off again after a reset. Often a shorted element or a burnt terminal block.
Drum and Noise

- GE dryer burning smell: Smells hot or like burning rubber or plastic. Stop the dryer first, then check for lint and the belt.
- GE dryer Check Vent light: The Check Vent light means the airflow is blocked. Clean the vent and reset the light.
Electric and Gas GE Dryers
Most GE dryer troubleshooting is the same for electric and gas models. The drum, belt, door switch, vent, and controls work the same way on both.
The difference is the heat. An electric GE dryer uses a heating element and a 240 volt double breaker, so if one half of the breaker trips, the drum still turns but there's no heat. A gas GE dryer uses an igniter and a flame instead. If the igniter never glows, or it glows but no flame lights, the problem is on the gas side.
Leave gas valve work, gas line repairs, and 240 volt wiring to a qualified technician.
