How to Fix a GE Dryer That Is Not Spinning or Turning

Why Is My GE Dryer Drum Not Spinning?

The most common reason a GE dryer is not spinning is a broken drive belt. If the belt is fine, check the idler pulley, drum glides, door switch, and motor.

Spin the Drum by Hand

This quick test tells you where to look next. Unplug the dryer, open the door, and turn the drum by hand.

• If it spins very easily, like there's nothing holding it, the belt is almost certainly broken or has slipped off.
• If it won't move at all or feels jammed, something is stuck, such as a seized pulley, a worn glide, or an object caught behind the drum.
• If it turns with normal, slight resistance, the belt is likely fine and the problem may be the motor or a switch.

Replace the Drive Belt

The drive belt is a long, thin rubber belt that wraps around the drum and connects to the motor. It stretch and wears with age, and eventually it snaps. When it does, the motor keeps running but the drum doesn't turn.

Check the Door Switch and Motor

If the belt, pulley, and glides all look fine, the drum may not be turning because the motor isn't running. A faulty door switch can stop the motor even when the lights come on.
