Why Won't My GE Dryer Start When It Has Power?

A GE dryer that has power but won't start usually has a door switch, start switch, or thermal fuse problem. Listen when you press Start: a hum points to the motor or belt, silence points to a switch.

Before you open anything, unplug the dryer. If your dryer is still under warranty, contact GE before doing any repair yourself.

Listen When You Press Start

This small test save a lot of guessing. Close the door, press and hold Start for a couple of seconds, and listen carefully.

• A hum or buzz means the motor is getting power but can't turn. Look at the belt, the drum, and the motor.
• If it won't start and just clicks, that often means a switch or the control is working but something else in the circuit is open.
• Total silence points to the door switch, the start switch, or the thermal fuse.

Also, don't let go of Start too quickly. Some GE dryers need you to hold the button for a second or two before the motor catches.

Check the Door Switch

Your dryer will not start if it thinks the door is open. A small switch inside the door frame tells the dryer the door is closed, and on older dryers this switch wears out or its plastic actuator breaks.

You can also check whether the drum light turns off when you press the switch. If the light stays on, the switch is not working. Never tape or bypass the door switch, because it's there to stop the drum when someone opens the door.

Test the Start Switch

The Start button presses on a switch behind the control panel. After years of use, this switch can stops making contact, so pressing it does nothing even though the rest of the dryer has power.

With the dryer unplugged, a technician or a confident DIYer can remove the control panel and test the switch for continuity while the button is pressed. If it doesn't show continuity, the switch needs replacing.

Test the Thermal Fuse

On many GE dryers, a blown thermal fuse stops the motor from starting, not just the heat. So a dryer with lights but no start can simply have a blown fuse.

Unplug the dryer, find the fuse on the blower housing or exhaust duct, and test it for continuity with a multimeter. If it's blown, replace it.

Then clean the vent, because the fuse only blows when the dryer overheats, and a clogged vent is usually what cause that.

Check the Belt and Drum If It Hums

If your dryer hums but won't start, the motor is trying to turn but something is holding it back. A broken belt can do this on model with a belt switch, and a jammed drum or seized idler pulley can do it too.

With the dryer unplugged, open the door and turn the drum by hand. If it spins very freely with no resistance, the belt is probably broken.
