GE Dryer Not Turning On? Here's How to Fix It

Is your GE dryer not turning on at all?

No lights, no sound, nothing when you press the buttons. I understand that can be worrying, specially with a load of wet laundry waiting.

Luckily, a completely dead dryer is very often a power problem outside the dryer, and those are the easiest fixes of all.

What to Check When a GE Dryer Won't Turn On

If your GE dryer is completely dead, check the plug and outlet, reset the breaker, and reset the dryer. Then check the control lock and thermal fuse.

Check the Plug and Outlet

Dryers gets pushed back against the wall after cleaning, and the heavy plug can work loose from the outlet without you noticing.

Pull the dryer out a little and make sure the plug is pushed all the way in. Look at the cord as well. If you see burn marks, melted plastic, or a damaged cord, don't use the dryer until an electrician or technician checks it.

Gas GE dryers plug into a normal 120 volt outlet. For these, you can plug a lamp into the same outlet to confirm it has power.

Reset the Breaker

A tripped breaker is the most common reason a dryer suddenly goes dead, often after a storm or a power outage.

Go to your electrical panel and find the breaker for the dryer. A tripped breaker can sit in the middle position, so it doesn't always look off. Switch it fully off, wait a few seconds, then switch it back on.

Reset Your GE Dryer

After a power outage or a surge, the control board on newer GE dryers can freeze and stop responding. A simple reset often bring it back.

To reset your GE dryer, do the following:

1. Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker.
2. Wait about five minutes so the control board fully loses power.
3. Plug it back in or switch the breaker on.
4. Press Power, if your model has it, and try a short cycle.

Turn Off the Control Lock

Many GE dryer have a control lock that stops the buttons from working. When it's on, the dryer can seem dead even though it has power.

Look for a lock icon on the display. On many GE models, you press and hold the Lock button for about three seconds to turn it off. The exact button can differ between models, so check your owner's manual if you don't see it.

Test the Thermal Fuse

On many GE dryers, the thermal fuse sits in the motor circuit, not just the heat circuit. So when it blows, the dryer won't run at all when you press Start, even if some models still show lights.

The fuse blows when the dryer overheats, which almost always means a blocked vent. With the dryer unplugged, you can test it for continuity with a multimeter. If it's blown, replace it and then clean the vent completely, or the new fuse will blow too.

If none of these checks bring your dryer back to life, the problem may be the control board or the internal wiring. At this point I'd recommend calling a qualified technician, because 240 volt wiring inside the dryer is not a safe DIY job.
